The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a national recall of several coloured sand and kinetic sand products due to the presence of asbestos in some tested items. While the risk to children and adults remains low, Koorana is taking this matter very seriously to ensure the ongoing safety of all children and families in our programs.
Why the Recall Has Been Issued
Recent testing identified traces of asbestos in certain coloured and kinetic sand products sold across Australia. Importantly, testing did not detect respirable asbestos—the type that can be breathed in—in any of the affected products.
Although the overall risk is considered very low, particularly when the sand is not crushed or broken apart, the ACCC has initiated a precautionary nationwide recall.
What Koorana Has Done
As soon as the recall was announced, Koorana implemented immediate safety measures:
Suspended all use and purchasing of coloured and kinetic sand across programs.
Completed an internal review of products previously purchased during the affected period.
Identified a small number of recalled products, which have now been removed from use and secured for safe disposal.
Removed and will safely dispose of all coloured and kinetic sand products on site, including those not listed in the recall, as an added precaution.
We are committed to transparency and safety, and we will continue monitoring updates from the ACCC.
What Families Can Do at Home
We encourage families to:
Check any coloured or kinetic sand you may have at home against the ACCC recall list.
Use the ACCC factsheets, which include photos and product names to help identify affected items.
Follow disposal and handling instructions if a recalled product is identified.
This recall applies to multiple brands and suppliers, so checking products purchased online, in discount stores, and at craft suppliers is recommended.
