Discovering the culture of Aboriginal people at Preschool

To celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, the Koorana Preschool children explored native plants and discussed how they can be used in cooking. We looked at warrigal greens, pigface, wattle, lemon myrtle and Dianella. We discovered that many plants could be used for a variety of purposes, like making soap, flour and helping our skin heal.

The children have enjoyed regular group time on the yarning circle mat. They have shared stories and explored books displaying the history of Aboriginal people and asked questions as to why anyone would want to eat an insect like the witchety grub.

Koorana Preschool children hope all children across Australia are taking time this week to explore the wonderful history of Australia and the Aboriginal people.
