Psychology Assessments

These assessments provide valuable insights into your child’s learning, development, and areas where additional support may be beneficial.

What is a Psychology Assessment?

A psychology assessment is a structured way of understanding a child’s thinking, learning, and development. At Koorana, our assessments are carried out by trained psychologists using standardised tools that provide valuable insights into your child’s strengths and areas where they may need extra support.

What kind of assessments Koorana Offers?

Cognitive Assessments (WISC & WPPSI)

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) are used to assess a child’s cognitive functioning. These assessments provide insight into a child’s abilities across areas such as:

  • Verbal comprehension
  • Reasoning
  • Memory
  • Processing speed

Results can guide learning supports, intervention planning, and help families and teachers better understand a child’s developmental profile.

Academic Assessment (WIAT)

The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT) measures a child’s academic skills in:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Oral language

This assessment creates a detailed picture of learning progress, highlighting strengths and areas that may benefit from additional support. It is often used to guide educational planning, track progress, and support applications for learning support services.

Can my child take both?

When used together, the cognitive (WISC/WPPSI) and academic (WIAT) assessments provide a comprehensive understanding of your child’s learning profile.

  • Cognitive assessments show how a child thinks and processes information.

  • Academic assessments show how those abilities are applied to school skills like reading, writing, and maths.

By comparing the results, psychologists can identify whether your child’s academic progress is consistent with their cognitive potential—or whether there are gaps that may suggest a learning difficulty, giftedness, or the need for targeted support.
